What are cooling tunnels?
Cooling tunnels
range from relatively small low-heat products to large high-heat products.
They can feature a combination of convection, conduction and radiation
cooling with zone control that give optimum results modified to the
customer's specific requirements. Cooling capabilities range from 30,000
Btu/hr to 500,000 Btu/hr depending on specific tunnel design features.
Cooling tunnels are mainly used in the chemical and food processing
industries.
Types of cooling tunnels
Steel belt cooling tunnels are used for both the chemical and food
processing industries, suitable for a range of confectionery products
(especially chocolate), for dairy products, rubber & plastic sheeting,
bitumen and many more. Typical Products which may be cooled on a steel belt
cooler include Sulphur; Naphthalene; Hot Melt Adhesives; Tall Oil Resins;
Industrial Waxes; Plastic Additives and similar industrial products which
may be solidified by the removal of heat through contact with the steel
belt.
In a continuous cooling tunnel the pallets are continuously transported
through the tunnel until the required temperature is attained. For products
needing different cooling-down periods a discontinuous cooling tunnel is
used. Cooling tunnels with discontinuous operational mode can cool the
different products as long as necessary: an automatic handling system sets
the pallets in a fixed parking place and collects them again once those
goods have reached the right temperature.
For products that can' be put on pallets, a tray cooling tunnel can be
used. In the tray cooler the products are cooled on individual trays. The
only moving element here is the tray handling system, which securely places
the trays in a fixed cooling place, from where it can fetch them again. This
approach makes the tray cooler very secure.

The Realcold tunnel consists of a portal frame structure of beams and columns. Suspended on rails within this portal frame are two levels of pallets of multi-level shelves. Cartons are automatically loaded and unloaded onto these shelves and mechanically moved through the tunnel. The evaporators and fans for the refrigeration plant are positioned along one side of pallet support frame for freezing, and positioned at the end for chilling.
